It was a trying day for the University of Wyoming track and field program at the NCAA West Preliminary round Thursday. Eight student-athletes competed on a warm, humid day in Austin with mixed results.

The UNLV track & field team had four student-athletes advance to Friday's quarterfinal action after their first-round performances at the 2012 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Preliminary Championship. Emily Blok and Brett Zorich ran personal-best times in the 100m (11.53) and 800m (2:07.64), respectively, on the first day of the three-day meet hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

No. 1 seed New Mexico topped tournament host and No. 4 seed UNLV Thursday night, 13-0, in the second game of the 2012 Mountain West Baseball Championship. The Lobos used a nine-run second inning to break the contest open and pick up an opening round victory at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

After the day one at the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary at Michael A. Myers Stadium, the University of New Mexico track and field team advanced one athlete to the national championships and two more the quarterfinal round of competition.

Brett Johnson's looping single over the drawn-in infield capped a wild ninth inning and gave TCU a 16-15 win over San Diego State in the opening game of the MW Tournament. The Aztecs rallied with 11 runs in the ninth to take the lead before the Horned Frogs scored two in the bottom for the win.

Whitney Gipson and Lorraine Ugen both punched their tickets to the final round of the NCAA Track and Field Championships Thursday to lead TCU on the opening day of the 2012 NCAA West Preliminary Round at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
