Jean-Paul Duminy (66 not out) guided the hosts to a comfortable win, as they reached their target of 237 with eight balls to spare at Buffalo Park in East London.

Opener Hashim Amla struck 55 to give South Africa a strong start after Dinesh Chandimal (92 not out) and Upul Tharanga (66) saw the tourists reach 6-236.

Amla and Graeme Smith (28) put on 76 for the opening wicket, and they were cruising at 3-152 even after Dhammika Prasad (3-46) had removed the openers and Jacques Kallis (37).

AB de Villiers and Francois du Plessis both fell cheaply, but Duminy, whose only boundary was a six, saw them to a convincing win with his steady 87-ball knock.

Earlier, Sri Lanka, who were bowled out for 43 in the first ODI, made another slow start, with danger men Tillakaratne Dilshan (0) and Kumar Sangakkara (three) failing.

Tharanga and Chandimal added 84 for the third wicket before the former fell to Morne Morkel (2-39).

Mahela Jayawardene (19) fell to the same man, while Nuwan Kulasekara (22) departed when Robin Peterson took a brave catch running with the flight of the ball off Lonwabo Tsotsobe (2-43).

But Chandimal helped steady the innings and set South Africa a challenging target, one they were always on track to chase.

The third ODI in the five-match series is in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.
