As rumours of such a happening circulate the Monte Carlo paddock, the respective representatives of Mercedes-Benz and Renault are sure that the new 1.6-litre, V6 turbo units should come in for 2014.

Mika Häkkinen will be watching this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix harbour-side and believes Lotus are the team to beat. Although good friend and fellow Finn Kimi Räikkönen managed only one lap on Thursday morning, as his steering was changed, team-mate Romain Grosjean demonstrated a strong pace and was second quickest.

A number of small modifications have been made on the grounds of safety ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. The largest is the levelling out of the dramatic bump in the braking zone of the Nouvelle Chicane, scene of large accidents for both Nico Rosberg and Sergio Pérez across the 2011 race weekend.

The Formula 1 community was collectively delighted to see Williams return to the top of the podium as Pastor Maldonado won last time out in Spain. After the race, thousands of pounds worth of IT equipment was destroyed in a garage fire and the Grove squad has put in a ‘Herculean’ effort to recover the situation.

Sauber team CEO Monisha Kaltenborn has received a third of the stake in the Sauber Group, it was announced by the Swiss company on Wednesday afternoon. The share has been given up by team owner Peter Sauber, who has already said that he intends to retire from his role of Team Principal by the end of next year.

No serious injuries are being reported, although a number of staff from three or four teams are being treated either at the Circuit de Catalunya or in hospital.

The Circuit de Catalunya has been rocked on Saturday evening, to the delight of many Spanish Formula 1 fans, as Lewis Hamilton was thrown out of pole position. The McLaren driver, who was not carrying enough fuel for a sample at the end of qualifying, will now sensationally start tomorrow’s race from the back of the field.
