Ron Hornaday Jr. is turning back the years as he grabbed the pole in the Smith’s 350 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday, October 14, 2011.

This was his Hornaday’s first pole of the 2011 season and his 27th in 296 Camping World Truck Series starts. His No. 33 Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet Silverado was clocked fastest at 176.056 mph.

Hornaday has already won three races this season and is a four-time series champion. He won the last race in Kentucky and will be looking to repeat the feat to drag himself back into the championship race.  Austin Dillon, who currently leads the Camping World Truck Series Championship by 3 points over James Buescher, put in another good qualifying performance and will be starting alongside Hornaday in 2nd place.  Dillon’s No. 3 Chevrolet was clocked at a speed of 175.793 mph.

Parker Kligerman will be starting in 3rd place followed by Johnny Sauter in 4th. Sauter’s teammate, Matt Crafton rounded off top five.

Championship contender James Buescher qualified in at 6th with Nelson Piquet Jr. in 7th place. Brian Ickler will start in 8th place with Ricky Carmichael and Miguel Paludo completing the top 10. Timothy Peters, who is still in the hunt for the championship, is in 11th place.

With 4 races to go after this race, the drivers know the importance of performing well in this race. Austin Dillon currently has a three-point lead over James Buescher.  Johnny Sauter is 19 points behind Dillon and will be fancying his chances of cutting down his lead at Las Vegas. Timothy Peters is 40 points behind with Ron Hornaday Jr. another 2 points behind him.

While Hornaday has a lot of deficit to cover, he will not be giving up yet and another victory at Las Vegas could cut down the deficit for him. With Cup regulars Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick not taking part in the races anymore, it is a good chance for all the drivers to grab a few victories to their name and the championship race promises to be a close one.

The Smith’s 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is scheduled to start on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Time.
